What features should I look for in a family home?
If you've decided that now is the right time to move into a family home, there are several factors you'll need to weigh up to ensure your decision is the right one.

Whether you're upsizing from your current home or getting onto the property ladder for the first time, make sure you ask yourself some key questions before making your choice.

What is the neighbourhood like?

One of the most important considerations is what your new neighbourhood is like. This means taking a look at all sorts of facts and figures, ranging from crime rates to demographics.

If, for example, your chosen property is in an area with a primarily older population, you might find it difficult to settle in with your new family.

Is there enough room?

Another factor you'll need to look at is how much space there is in your potential property. Don't just think about the short term, but decide if it'll meet your needs well into the future.

While your kids might be able to share a room now, ask yourself if they're likely to want to do so several years down the line. If not, you must ensure there's enough space to go round.

What renovation work needs to be done?

You might move into your family home with the intention of doing lots of renovation work, but if not then you'll have to make sure the property is in top condition.

Having a survey carried out will give you an idea as to how structurally sound the property is and whether you'll need to invest time and money into putting it right.

Are there any schools nearby?

Families need to know there are plenty of good quality schools in their local area if they're going to move there, so it's important to do your research.

Find out what the application process is and whether your kids will be able to make the move.
